Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, tuned and measured

What Modern Warfare 4 needs before it lets you online, how NOVA's Checkup reads it, Activision's own crash steps, and how NOVA stays out of the game.

No FPS promise here: what Modern Warfare 4 gains depends on how your PC is set up today. NOVA shows what's holding it back, then measures before and after.

01Before you play: anti-cheat

If Modern Warfare 4 won't start or won't let you online, check these first. When the game is in your library, NOVA's Checkup reads each of them on your PC and tells you which one is off. TPM, Secure Boot and Resizable BAR are switched on in your BIOS, and NOVA shows the steps; AVX is part of the processor, so no setting can add it.

Activision adds that other security measures may be enforced, so when all of these are on, NOVA says Modern Warfare 4 meets the published requirements, not that it will run. Activision's own Secure Attestation Wizard also scans your BIOS for its security requirements.

NOVA never runs inside a game, reads its memory or changes its program files. The optional controller and mouse overclock installs a signed USB driver; check the game's rules first. How NOVA stays out of games →

03If it crashes: Activision's steps

Activision's own crash advice for PC, in its order:

  1. Keep the PC somewhere cool and well ventilated.
  2. Check it meets the minimum requirements above.
  3. Close every app running in the background.
  4. If crashes keep happening, uninstall input remapping software, overlays and recording software. Activision says these can disrupt the game's start even when they aren't running.
  5. Update your graphics driver to the versions Activision recommends.

On the first launch, Windows asks whether to let CODBrokerInstaller.exe make changes: it registers your TPM for the game, and Activision says choosing No means you can't play.

NOVA's in-game overlay is off until you switch it on (Games › Overlay), and it's one switch for every game. If Modern Warfare 4 keeps crashing with it on, switch it off. Activision's next step is uninstalling apps of this kind; if you get that far, Revert all in History first puts back every change NOVA made.

04Measure it on your PC

  1. Benchmark › Proof mode runs the same test before and after a change and tells you whether the difference is real or within the noise, including when it made none.
  2. The in-game overlay shows FPS and frame time in a corner of Modern Warfare 4, drawn in its own window, without touching the game.
  3. History lists every change NOVA made, with undo for each, or Revert all.
